Austin was a funky little college town known more for its hippies than its techies when Roy Spence and his partners founded GSD&M in 1971. Since then, Spence has become a legend in the Austin creative community as the head of the ad agency. He’s helped numerous iconic companies discover their (capital ‘P’) Purpose: the defining qualities that guide their decisions, improve their methods, and distinguish them from the competition.
In the past decade, he’s founded The Purpose Institute to extend this journey of discovery to individuals, helping people find purpose and passion in what they do. Our purpose at SXSW is helping creative people achieve their goals; we were psyched to talk with Spence about the value and importance of having a purpose.
