There’s still time to enter your essay for the 2017 David Carr Prize! The official deadline has been extended through Sunday, December 18 at 11:59pm CT.
Last year, SXSW launched the David Carr Prize to honor the late great writer and SXSW alumni speaker as well as spotlight the intersection of technology and journalism. David Carr had a strong influence on the community of creatives that come to Austin each March, so we are pleased to accept submissions for the second annual David Carr Prize.
All emerging (and established) writers, bloggers, and journalists are invited to honor Carr’s interest in the convergence of new media, technology, and culture by entering an essay or short story of 2,000 words or less. Entries must follow this year’s prompt: What will it mean to be human in the age of machine learning and artificial intelligence? What will this mean to you in terms of human creativity, identity, love, communication, and community? Given that current AI-based algorithms are a big part of today’s fake news problem, your essay might also address human solutions to this pressing issue.
The author of the winning essay will be honored at the SXSW Interactive Innovation Awards on Tuesday evening, March 14, 2017. The complete prize package includes (1) SXSW Platinum Badge, (1) airline voucher, and (4) night stay in Austin during SXSW.
Read the 2016 finalists’ essays, including the winning entry by Jaime Boust, and review the Official Giveaway Rules before entering. Original and unpublished entries will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of various SXSW staffers. The final deadline to enter is Sunday, December 18 at 11:59pm CT.
