With the 2020 U.S. election on the horizon, potential candidates are already lining up and conversations about the future are in full swing. Former Starbucks Chairman & CEO Howard Schultz took the stage at SXSW 2019 to discuss his potential candidacy with senior media reporter Dylan Byers of NBC News & MSNBC.

The interview covered a lot of ground quickly as Schultz opened up about the current political climate and his potential platform. Schultz makes it clear that he believes our two party system is dysfunctional and the nation lacks strong leadership. His answer lies in a third party centrist approach.

“I think the American people agree with me. They want to see another choice.” – Schultz

The conversation between Schultz and Byers delves into capitalism, international relations, and so much more. Ultimately, Schultz draws on the lessons learned as the CEO of Starbucks to answer pressing questions. While Starbucks has certainly transformed the role businesses play in society by giving back to communities and staying committed to profits as well as humanity, the SXSW audience is left wondering whether Schultz’s business acumen at Starbucks will translate into a position in the oval office.
