Founding Partner and Creative Director of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), Bjarke Ingels, journeyed to SXSW 2019 to give a Featured Session covering the constant forces driving change to our physical environments.
According to Ingels, climate change, demographic change, social change, migration, technological development, economic development, and stagnation are all impacting the world around us.
“Architecture is almost always created by adapting to some existing situation.” – Bjarke Ingels
To prove his point, Ingels outlined the plans for The Dryline, a 10 mile stretch of protective parks across the entire waterfront of lower Manhattan in New York. Breaking ground in 2020, the project serves as a flood protection measure that was designed in partnership with the local communities to create a waterfront that will keep Manhattan dry and accessible at the same time.
Ingels also outlined plans for sustainable living at sea as well as his ambition to have sustainable living on Mars as part of the Mars 2117 initiative.
