Evolution of Transportation and Delivery – 2019 SXSW Programming Trends

February 13, 2019 Lexi Seay

Each year at SXSW, prominent trends emerge from Conference programming that provide insight into the future of tech, entertainment, and culture. From the 10 significant trends identified by the SXSW Programming Team for the 2019 event, Evolution of Transportation and Delivery dives into the rapid evolution of mobility and delivery and the necessary changes that must occur to keep up with on-demand ecosystems.

Since the early days of sci-fi movies there were predictions that we would have flying cars by 2015. Are we falling behind schedule? What will it take for this sci-fi fantasy to become a reality? Flying cars aside, no sci-fi could have predicted the vast on-demand ecosystem that developed in the transportation industry; ranging from passenger transport to the shipping of goods, and the meteoric rise of companies like Amazon that have driven this new environment.

To meet demand, old and new transportation companies must continue to adapt quickly or risk losing out on a trillion-dollar economy in which goods can arrive at a doorstop by land or sky. We are already seeing the effects of a future powered by AI with debates happening over gig economy rights, urban design, and airspace regulation. Allowing the consumer to get whatever they want, whenever they want, without leaving their home has become the new norm. It is now up to the transportation industry to keep up.

Evolution of Transportation and Delivery Trend

Join the conversation at SXSW this March and be the first to know where the transportation industry is heading. Investors including Mary Ann Azevedo of Crunchbase News, David Blumberg of Blumberg Capital, Jordan Fudge of Sinai Ventures and Merav Rotem Naaman of Verizon will discuss emerging technologies and how they are revolutionizing the way we think of mobility in the session The Trillion Dollar VC Mobility Bet. Want to know the potential benefits of flying vehicles? Discover how flying taxis can help the workforce and ambulance drones can save lives with Roland Gerhards of ZAL GmbH, Mark Moore of Uber, Henriette Van Eijl of European Commission and Susan Ying of Ampaire in the session Flying Taxis & Ambulance Drones: SciFi 2 Reality.

Although flying cars may seem like a longshot, the mass production of autonomous vehicles is just around the corner. Learn more about the current pioneer stage of autonomous vehicles and the barriers to adoption with Karl Iagnemma of Aptiv Automated Mobility in the session Death Toll, Zero: Autonomous Vehicle Safety + Adoption.

Delve into conversations addressing urban transportation and analyze the cost-benefits that would come with shared access to electric vehicles, driverless transportation and more. Join Laura Bliss of The Atlantic’s CityLab, Doug Kelsey of TriMet, and Oliver Reppert of car2go Group Gmbh for their panel Survival of the Fittest: Mobility in Cities. Continue looking into the future and explore the development of hyper loops and traveling at transonic speeds with University of Texas Alumnus Vik Parthiban in the session Air-Levitation: A New Hyperloop Transport Method.

Make sure to add these sessions to your 2019 SXSW Schedule so you can experience the evolution of transportation conversation for yourself in March. Stay tuned for more programming announcements.
