C O M Interstellar Rodeo Festival Lineups 2016 SXSW Music Festival Showcase presenter, Interstellar Rodeo, recently released the lineups for their Canadian festivals this summer. The festivals, which take place July 22-24 in Edmonton and August 12-14 in Winnipeg, will feature several 2016 SXSW Showcasing Artists including Adia Victoria, Fantastic Negrito, Margo Price, The Strumbellas, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down and The Wet Secrets, among others. SXSW PanelPicker Launches June 28 It's already time to start thinking about SXSW 2017! We were blown away by the innova- tive programming ideas for 2016, so we're excited to begin looking ahead to next year. As always, we need your help. Starting Tuesday, June 28, you can submit a proposal for SXSW 2017 in the SXSW PanelPicker®, the official SXSW user-generated session submission platform. This easy, two-step online process allows the SXSW community to have a voice in what programming is scheduled at SXSW and SXSWedu. From June 28 through July 22, enter your session proposal related to music, film and digital technologies in a variety of formats including panels, solo presentations, work- shops and more. When the PanelPicker opens, the application process is simple: visit panelpicker.sxsw.com, read the FAQs and fill out the application with your brilliant idea. All entries received will be posted online later in the summer for community voting. Community voting comprises 30% of the final decision. Additional input from the SXSW Staff (30%) and Programming Committee (40%) helps ensure that lesser-known voices have as much of a chance to be selected to speak at SXSW as individuals with large online fol- lowings. SXSW Gaming Awards Open for Business this Summer The SXSW Gaming Awards will begin accepting entries for its fourth annual competition later this summer. The Gaming Awards at SXSW 2017 will honor the best gaming projects of 2016, covering both AAA and indie titles. Following a record-breaking number of entries for SXSW Gaming 2016, totaling over 500 entries, we're excited to see which great games of 2016 will take home the grand prize next year. Each entry will be free of charge, and all award categories are open to all applicable projects. Think your gaming work has what it takes to take home an award at next year's show? Changing the Face of Music & Tech at SXSW's Music Hackathon & Incubator The SXSW Music Hackathon and Incubator pro- gram wrapped up on Saturday, March 19, with winning teams selected by an all-star panel of judges, including Werner Vogels (Amazon CTO), Selcuk Atli (500 Startups), Josh Constine (TechCrunch Editor-at-Large), Chris Becherer (Pandora VP of Product), Lance Coleman aka Fuze the MC (Artist/Digital Strategist for the Blueprint Group), and Eric Sheinkop (Music Dealers Founder/CEO). The Commerce category prize went to instant micro-performance platform Secret Set, built using Musikki's API. The Creation prize was awarded to license-free unique music sample generator SamPack, built using IBM's Watson API. Cognitunes, which makes music matched to your emotions through voice recognition and featured Amazon's Alexa & AWS, as well as IBM's Watson APIs, won the the Consumer prize. The teams then convened at the SXSW Music Incubator where organizer Travis Laurendine of CODEMKRS led the group through a three-day lean startup-inspired program to grow the hacks from prototypes into startups with real customers. As part of the program, teams received hands- on mentorship from Panos Panay of the Berklee Institute for Creative Entrepreneurship and SonicBids.com, Alex Ebert of Skrapps.com and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Kiran Gandhi of M.I.A. and Madame Gandhi, Danny Lee, who is part of the management team for will.i.am and Wu Tech Clan, Michael Hendrix of Ideo, Selcuk Atli, and Ritesh and Jigar Patel of The Ticket Fairy (Y Combinator). Music business students from the Berklee ICE program were matched with each team to help them go live with their apps in a real world environment.
