whurley, founder and CEO of the startup Strangeworks, left the audience buzzing about the future of quantum computing and how it will forever change technology and potentially the balance of international power during his Convergence Keynote at the 2018 SXSW Conference. From artificial intelligence and meteorology to breakthroughs in molecular modeling and particle physics, whurley predicts that the emergence of quantum computing technology will disrupt countless fields and even our day-to-day lives.
“I believe that quantum computing is another paradigm shift in computing and I think it can change what we think of as computing more in the next 10 to 15 years than computing has evolved in the last 100 years.”
During the keynote, whurley provides context to “quantum” and takes the audience through a brief history of computer science, highlighting historical partnerships and discoveries leading up to the monumental changes happening today in data and quantum computing. The momentum behind today’s work is largely the result of courseware, startups, partnerships, and the development of programs focused on the unique community. “In quantum, it’s not like other startups. I’m not hiding the secrets from other startups. I’m not seeing them as competitors. This is so complex and world-changing we’re all working together and it’s like one big family. It is so exciting and I really love that aspect of it.”
Outside of his role as CEO at Strangeworks in Austin, Texas, whurley is the Chair of the Quantum Standards Working Group at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a frequent quantum computing blogger on superposition.com. His latest book, Endless Impossibilities brings the realities of a quantum future into the present, helping readers understand and prepare for the coming age of quantum computing.
